Third District Commander Jeffrey Walls, who is also the commander over the mounted division, offers safety tips for encountering horses during Mardi Gras season.
· Get the rider’s permission before petting the horse or taking photos with the horse
· Do not tug on the horse’s gear
· Do not feed the horse
Although interacting with mounted horses is allowed, Commander Walls reminds pedestrians to proceed with caution to avoid injuries.
"Each horse has its own temperament and personality, so every encounter will be different."
Pedestrians should also remember that NOPD Mounted horses are on duty with their rider and should avoid contact with a horse during an apprehension.
