|NOPD UNDERCOVER OPERATION SENDS MAN TO JAIL IN CRAIGSLIST SCAM
NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD has arrested 35-year-old Charles Stewart in connection with a scooter theft involving Craigslist. The scooter was initially reported stolen on Monday, May 18, 2015, from the 2600 block Chartres Street.
The 29-year-old male victim told detectives he placed the scooter missing on Craigslist. Later that day, the victim said a concerned citizen phoned him, telling him that someone by the name of “Tommy” had an identical scooter on Craigslist for sale. The victim relayed the Craigslist information to Fifth District Detective Bryan Mulvey.
On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, around 1:00 p.m., Detectives Bryan Murvey, Brian Baye and Jamaane Roy, agreed to meet “Tommy” at the intersection of Arts and North Rocheblave Street in Saint Roch. The detectives all posed as potential buyers for the scooter in the undercover operation.
While on the scene, the detectives observed the white scooter and three unknown black males in front of a residence in the 2600 block of North Rocheblave Street. Tommy, who was later identified as Charles Stewart, answered a phone call that was placed by Detective Mulvey while on the scene. This was the same number that the unknown citizen gave to the victim after seeing it on Craigslist.
Based on the facts and evidence surrounding the investigation, the detectives had enough probable cause to arrest Stewart and charge him with Possession of Stolen Property. The two other individuals on the scene were not charged in the incident.
The scooter was returned to the victim after he positively identified it and produced the proper registration.
