NOPD UPDATE ON FRENCH QUARTER SHOOTING – warrant rescinded

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOPD UPDATE ON FRENCH QUARTER SHOOTING

NEW ORLEANS—This is an update on the arrest warrant issued Friday for 17-year-old Jerry Harris who was wanted in connection with the non-fatal shooting of two 23-year-old men. The shooting occurred in the 400 block of Dauphine Street on Friday afternoon.

After new details were obtained by NOPD investigators, the warrant has been rescinded.

Initially, Harris was positively identified by an independent witness from a six-pack photo line-up as the shooter. With this information, NOPD investigators secured a warrant for Harris’ arrest on Friday afternoon.

Earlier today, Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff Deputies located Harris after learning he was wearing an ankle monitor. When Eight District detectives attempted to speak to Harris at Central Lock-up, his attorneys refused the interview. Eventually, investigators learned Harris’ ankle monitor confirmed he was not in the area at the time of this incident. Therefore, the warrant for Mr. Harris was rescinded and Harris has been released.

NOPD detectives are currently in the process of reviewing other video footage and re-interviewing witnesses in an effort to identify the suspect responsible for the shooting.

The Eighth District Investigative Unit is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at 504-658-6080.

Citizens with information that can help solve this crime are asked to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP. You could receive a cash reward of up to $2,500 for the information leading only to the arrest, except on homicides, where Crimestoppers will pay half of the reward upon the arrest and half on the indictment of the responsible person(s). NOPD UNDERCOVER OPERATION SENDS MAN TO JAIL IN CRAIGSLIST SCAM

NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD has arrested 35-year-old Charles Stewart in connection with a scooter theft involving Craigslist. The scooter was initially reported stolen on Monday, May 18, 2015, from the 2600 block Chartres Street.

The 29-year-old male victim told detectives he placed the scooter missing on Craigslist. Later that day, the victim said a concerned citizen phoned him, telling him that someone by the name of “Tommy” had an identical scooter on Craigslist for sale. The victim relayed the Craigslist information to Fifth District Detective Bryan Mulvey.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, around 1:00 p.m., Detectives Bryan Murvey, Brian Baye and Jamaane Roy, agreed to meet “Tommy” at the intersection of Arts and North Rocheblave Street in Saint Roch. The detectives all posed as potential buyers for the scooter in the undercover operation.

While on the scene, the detectives observed the white scooter and three unknown black males in front of a residence in the 2600 block of North Rocheblave Street. Tommy, who was later identified as Charles Stewart, answered a phone call that was placed by Detective Mulvey while on the scene. This was the same number that the unknown citizen gave to the victim after seeing it on Craigslist.

Based on the facts and evidence surrounding the investigation, the detectives had enough probable cause to arrest Stewart and charge him with Possession of Stolen Property. The two other individuals on the scene were not charged in the incident.

The scooter was returned to the victim after he positively identified it and produced the proper registration.
